HWNT Fall/ Winter Outreach

Our HWNT team has been busy with outreach and volunteers projects over the past few months to make a difference in the El Paso community.

TREATS FOR FOSTER KIDS:
During October, HWNT members collected donations of candy and stuffed Halloween goody bags to help provide treats to foster kids living at the Lee Moore Children's Home.

FRIDA FEST:
The HWNT Chapter continued their tradition of honoring the legendary Frida Kahlo with their annual Frida Fest. Held in celebration of Dia de los Muertos, the event included an art exhibit of Frida-inspried artwork, artist vendors, music and a Frida look-alike contest.

SPIRIT OF GIVING:
To spread the spirit of giving, HWNT members collected canned food donations during Thanksgiving to donate to the UTEP food pantry helping students dealing with food insecurity issues. For the winter season, the HWNT team shared the warm with their annual winter wear drive. Our team gathered items such as jackets, blankets, mittens, hats, socks and scarves to help families living at La Posada Home.

LATINAS IN PROGRESS:
Our Latinas in Progress program took place with bi-weekly sessions throughout the fall semester. Our high school members learned about the importance of college, took a college tour, met college student leaders, heard from inspirational professional panels, participated in college prep workshops, learned about college application process and practiced admission and scholarship essay writing. Our team was thrilled to present our fall scholarship for $500 to Valery Lopez, a graduating high school senior from Bowie High School.

PANCAKES WITH SANTA:
Our team hosted a breakfast with Santa pancake benefit to help raise scholarships in December. Guests were delighted with delicious pancake plates served by HWNT elves. Our members provided crafts for children and kids had a chance to take a photo with Santa. In addition, our team delivered holiday brunch to kids living at the local Transitional Living Center and Child Crisis Center.

HWNT State Conference

The Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas will be hosting its 31st HWNT State Conference this September 22-24th in Fort Worth, Texas at the Marriott Hotel and Golf Club. The conference will focus on the theme of Force of the Future.

The conference is an opportunity for members and women across Texas to practice the values and ideas that make up the organization. The network believes that our future is female. The conference will allow attendees to share their personal stories, issues, and grow as individuals who can make their mark on the world.

In hopes of empowering women, the conference will host events, sessions and more. Sessions will revolve around leadership and social change, professional development, and personal growth. The subject of women and women rights have been a popular subject in our current political climate. HWNT wants to give leverage to Latinas and women all over Texas. This years theme will ignite members. HWNT hopes these sessions serve as inspiration and will engage our women to become activists, civically engaged, and lead them to become stronger women in the workforce. Attendees will have access to listen to the networks special guest speaker, Sylvia Mendez. Luncheons, award ceremonies for the network's chairs, are among other event scheduled during the two day conference.

Registration is currently open with the early bird rate of $159 for members, $200 for non-members and $75 for students until September 1st. For more information about the schedule, registration, and sponsorship, visit hwnt.org.

LETTER FROM A SCHOLARSHIP AWARD WINNER
Hello, my name is Fernanda, and I am the scholarship recipient for the HWNT Latinas in Progress scholarship from this past spring.  I wanted to write to you to thank you for giving me the great opportunity of winning the scholarship. It will aid me in many ways, and it has facilitated my college application process. I will use it wisely. Once again, thank you for your generosity. I'm excited for college, and I'm thankful that I was able to use this as an aid to achieve my goals.
Many thanks, Gabriela Fernanda
