Holiday Celebration

Our team is hosting a Holiday Posada on December 4, 2015 at 6:00pm 200 Texas Ave. (CafĂ© Mayapan). Bring your family and friends to this festive event, which will feature food, entertainment, $1 bingo with prizes and children’s activities! Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. We are also accepting winter wear donations to help the local needy. Also, please let us know if you would be in interested in joining our planning team! We need help with coordinating entertainment, selling tickets, receiving raffle prize donations and hosting children’s games & crafts. For all information, please view our event flyer:

Member Spotlight: Diana Schultz

Meet Diana Schultz, our HWNT El Paso Professional Development Chair.  Special thanks to Diana for organizing our Hispanic Heritage Month Latina Power Panel.

She is a recent transplant from Corpus Christi, Texas, where she was also an active member of HWNT Corpus Christi Chapter. She is the CEO of Kindred Hospital. She completed her master’s degree in Public Administration and has previous experience as a hospital administrator and working as human resources manager at an acute care hospital.


Estrella de Tejas - Danna Diaz

HWNT El Paso would like to recognize Dr. Danna Diaz, our founding chapter President, for being honored at the HWNT Statewide Conference as one of the Estrellas de Tejas. Dr. Diaz was recognized for her dedication to education as a teacher and school administrator, as well as for her community service through HWNT. Thanks to Dr. Diaz for representing our chapter at the State Conference held this year in Houston. We are proud of her efforts in building a strong foundation to launch our El Paso Chapter as well as sponsoring our first scholarship.

Service Project - Food Drive

Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive
We will be hosting at our November general meeting a canned food drive. We encourage all those attending to bring donations to help those in need. All collected food will go to La Posada Home.

Member Spotlight Carmen Solis-Rodriguez

HWNT would like to recognize Carmen Solis-Rodriguez for her dedication to our team. We appreciate Carmen opening her lovely home as the hostess for our August membership meeting. Thank you for your hospitality and warmth. She is our current Scholarship Chair and she is helping our group provide scholarships for deserving girls. She has been in HWNT for over a year and formerly served as our Chair Elect. She served as our liaison to the HWNT State Officers and helped represent our group at the state annual meeting. Carmen is committed to promoting education and supporting youth in our community as the Principal of Brown Middle School. We appreciate all the enthusiasm she shares with our team.

October General Meeting

NEXT MEETING: OCTOBER 7 Save the date for our next meeting - Wednesday, October 7 at 6:30pm at Kindred Hospital (1740 Curie). Our professional development chair is organizing a group of inspiring speakers as a part of our Latina Power Panel in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

College Essay & Application Workshop

HWNT is helping girls prepare for college with a FREE college essay writing and application workshop. High school girls are invited to get tips on improving their college applications and will get one-on-one assistance with reviewing and editing their essays and applications. The session will take place on October 10 from 11am-1pm at 2000 Texas Ave. This workshop is a part of our Latinas in Progress college prep program.

September Updates

WELCOME NEW BOARD MEMBERS:
We are excited to welcome new board members - Valerie Venecia (Secretary), Sara Aragon (Membership VP), Sarah Ortiz (Treasurer/ Marketing Chair), Carmen Solis-Rodriguez (Scholarship Chair), Diana Schultz (Professional Development Chair) & Sylvia Bonscher (Sisterhood Chair). Thank you to these talented women leaders for stepping up to take on a leadership role in advancing our HWNT chapter & serving the community!

EDUCATION UPDATE: 
Our team is kicking-off our Latinas in Progress education program. We are recruiting female teens to participate in our Latinas in Progress college-prep program. Girls will meet one Saturday a month for leadership, college readiness workshops, and community service projects. Our orientation & college essay writing workshop will be held on Saturday, October 17th at the Jose Cisneros Library (1300 Hawkins) from 2:00-3:30pm. Please share this opportunity with area girls. We are also recruiting volunteers to serve as mentors for our group of young leaders. For more information, contact us at hwntelpaso@gmail.com. 

COMMUNITY SERVICE:  
Our team was invited by the YMCA to volunteer during their KABOOM playground project on October 3rd at the Fred Loya YMCA location.  Volunteers are needed to assist with building a new playground for local children (no building experience needed). Latinas in Progress College Prep Program

Attention high school juniors & seniors!  We are accepting applications for female teens to participate in our Latinas in Progress college-prep program. Girls will meet one Saturday a month for leadership presentations, college readiness workshops, and community service projects.  Applications are due by November 20. The program kicks off on January 23 and runs through May.

HWNT September Meeting

Thanks to everyone who joined us at our August Meeting. The HWNT team is preparing for a busy fall season. We are gearing up to host a scholarship and organize the Latinas in Progress college preparation program for high school seniors. Our general membership meeting will take place on September 9th at 7:00pm.  Mark your calendars! We will be meeting at 6:00pm for our scholarship review committee immediately before our general meeting. Thank you to Carmen Solis-Rodriguez for hosting our meeting. Members are invited to bring a school supply item to contribute to our back to school supply drive for local children. We hope to see you there. Chapter Planning Meeting

If you are a looking to join a group that is motivated, energetic and forward thinking, then you are in the right place. Our chapter is a multicultural mix of women of all ages who invest time, creativity, and resources to promote the advancement of women in all facets of life.

HWNT MEETING:
The HWNT team is preparing for a busy fall season. After the summer break, we are regrouping with a planning meeting. If you would like to take on a leadership role in helping shape the future of this outstanding organization, please join us. CELEBRATING OUR FIRST YEAR:
Under the leadership of Dr. Danna Diaz, our team was able to spend the last year launching the local HWNT chapter. Thanks to our fearless leader, we were able to officially get our local chapter status from the HWNT state board of directors. Our founding board members laid out a solid foundation for the future. We have many accomplishments to be proud of from the last year:
-We were officially recognized as a chapter by the HWNT state board 
-We kicked off our first annual college scholarship
-We hosted a school supply drive to benefit head start children
-We supported the Quince Project to host a charity quinceanera for deserving girls
-We hosted an easter basket drive for a local children's shelter
-We hosted a toiletry drive for a local woman's shelter
-We hosted a thanksgiving food drive to sponsor a meal at the Posada homeless shelter
-We partnered with the Viva la Mujer festival
Thanks to Dr. Diaz for helping launch our local chapter. We are proud of her outstanding efforts to bring the HWNT chapter to our local El Paso community. We wish her much good fortune as she embarks on her next chapter as the superintendent at San Juan Island School District.

Quince Project - Madrinas Wanted

The HWNT team is partnering with the Quince Project to help make girls' quince dreams come true. We are recruiting HWNT members to join the Madrinas team. This group of local female leaders is dedicated to helping organize a group quince party for a group of deserving girls who have hardships and would otherwise not be able to enjoy this cultural celebration.  This team helps with leadership workshops, mentoring youth, gathering contributions and aiding with quince event planning. To volunteer, contact us at hwntelpaso@gmail.com.

Leaders Wanted

Community Service Chair

The Community Service Committee is responsible for planning monthly volunteer opportunities and encouraging members to serve the local community. Join us to help plan service efforts, share your ideas, or just learn more about what we do and how you can help.

Development Chair

The Development Committee has the great responsibility to raise donations for our scholarship fund and youth educational series. This happens through coordinating marketing activities, fundraising events, sponsorships, and member fundraising campaigns. 

Events Chair

The Events Chair is responsible for the planning, organizing, and completion of both member-only, and public events. 

Scholarship Chair

The Scholarship Chair awards educational funds through multiple scholarships. In addition, the chair manages the marketing and application process for scholarships as well as the communication with previous scholarship recipients.

Marketing Chair

The Marketing Chair is responsible for promoting awareness of HWNT through collateral development, public relations, event promotion, membership exclusive newsletters and deployment of engaging social media tactics.

Membership Chair

The Membership Committee is responsible for the cultivation of the organization’s members. This committee takes care of recruiting, retaining and coordinating member events.

Education Chair

The Education Chair is responsible for the planning and logistics of Latinas in Progress educational program helping prepare high school girls for college.
