HWNT Winter Noticias


LATINAS IN PROGRESS WORKSHOPS:
Throughout the fall, our team mentored a group of local teens in monthly college prep and leadership workshops. Our girls were attentive and excited to be part of our program. We would like to thank Aurora Anaya- Dyer for hosting a Visioning Workshop to help our girls envision their future goals. Also, a huge thank you to Sara Aragon for giving a very successful leadership workshop and sharing helpful tips to the girls on how to handle stress.  Special thanks to our program partners at Southwest University and Vista College for hosting a campus tour and college student panels. Thanks to Monica Quiett, Sara Aragon and Yolanda Vazquez for sharing their college experience during our September 10th session.  Thank you to our HWNT members for helping inspire the next generation of college bound leaders.

TOILETRY DRIVE
Thanks to all our members who support our toiletry drive by donating items to support the Opportunity Homeless Shelter. Or team gathered items such as shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, hair brushes and lotion that will provide much-needed assistance to the local homeless community.

Throughout the fall, our team was proud to present the Latinas in Progress program. Our members participated in the following college prep and leadership activities:

  • Met with STEM professional role models & mentors
  • Discovered a variety or professional careers

HWNT ANNUAL STATE CONFERENCE

30th ANNIVERSARY STATEWIDE CONFERENCE

The Hispanic Women's Network of Texas- El Paso, along with eleven chapters across Texas, is proud to announce its 30th Annual Conference, "Pearls of Wisdom, Cultivating Leaders" on September 30th October 2, 2016. This year's Honorary Chairs exemplify the organizations mission, vision, values and beliefs that HWNT embodies. Join Dr. Elba Garcia, Dallas County Commissioner, District 4, Mary Louise Garcia, Tarrant County Clerk, and Dr. Monica Mendez-Grant, Vice-President for Student Life at Texas Woman's University for an empowering and inspiring weekend of reflections, celebrations and visioning. Several local HWNT members attended this uplifting women's conference.

We were proud to honor our own Estrella de Tejas from the El Paso region: Aurora Anaya-Dyer. Each year at the HWNT State conference, HWNT Chapters honor women, from among the membership, who have made a significant contributions to their chapter and community. To be an Estrella, a woman must be an HWNT member, demonstrate leadership qualities, serve as a role model for fellow members and make an impact in her community. JOIN THE HWNT TEAM FOR A FALL FIESTA
Latinas in Progress Chipotle Benefit Night Make dinner a selfless act by joining us for a fundraiser to support the Latinas in Progress program. Come in to the Chipotle at the Fountain’s (8889 Gateway W. Blvd Suite 2510) in El Paso on Wednesday, September 7th between 5:00pm and 9:00pm. Bring in this flyer, show it on your smartphone or tell the cashier you’re supporting the cause to make sure that 50% of the proceeds will be donated to the Latinas in Progress Program.


WE DID IT! QUINCE PROJECT 
The Quince Project Madrinas team is a group dedicated to helping make girls' quince dreams come true for low income girls. HWNT would like to thank all our members who contributed to the success of this event to create an unforgettable celebration. Our team helped with food preparations, decorations and dresses. The girls had a delightful evening and we would like to thank you for being part of this beautiful project. The service of our members is greatly appreciated.


HIGHLIGHTS FALL - MEMBERSHIP MEETING:
We would like to express our appreciation to our recent meeting hosts Evolve Credit Union. Thanks to the Evolve Credit Union team for sharing their resources and promoting financial literacy. We had a very successful meeting where we talked about future plans and events for HWNT El Paso.  

TAMACC CONFERENCE: Our team had the great pleasure of participating in the statewide Texas Association of Mexican-American Chamber of Commerce conference. We had the opportunity to connect with local community leaders, meet with delegates from our HWNT state board of directors and promote our membership opportunity. Thanks to our HWNT members who helped represent our chapter and promoted our membership program.

Member of the Month

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: LETICIA ALVA 

We are proud to present to you our Member of the Month: Leticia Alva. Leticia has been involved in PTA as an events coordinator. Leticia also served as the Recruiting President, meanwhile her daughters were in elementary school and middle school. Also, she served as a leader of the Girl Scouts for 10 years. Currently, she is working on her Bachelor's Degree in Spanish and a minor in Translation at the University of Texas at El Paso. Aside from all her work and experience in the community, Leticia is a cosmetologist. Leticia Alva was encouraged to join HWNT because she has always been interested in helping girl become the leaders of tomorrow, especially Hispanic girls. Leticia loves to be able to network with other professional Hispanic women who share the same goal and objective as her to help young Latinas be successful in their lives. Leticia would like to advice women to never underestimate themselves on what they can achieve, to always believe in yourself. Leticia has served in Latinas in Progress LIP and she will be our future treasurer.

We Stand Strong 9/11 Family Fun Day

September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance 

This event is a community collaboration hosted In partnership with Save the Children, a global leader in disaster preparation and relief,  and Youth Service America. The emergency preparedness fair will be held at the Main Public Library (501 N.Oregon) on September 11 to  engage youth in helping their communities be prepared for disasters. As a part of this event, we need volunteers to assist with set-up, decorating, leading fun games and activities aimed at raising awareness of emergency and disaster preparation, giving away prizes and breaking down.

WHAT: This community service event aims to help build community awareness and educate children and families about simple things they can do to stay safe in emergencies. Through fun and educational games and activities, this fair will help families prepare for or mitigate disasters.
WHERE: Main Public Library (501 N.Oregon)
WHEN: September 11th from 12pm to 3pm

WHO: The We Stand Strong local committee is led by the Hispanic Women's Network of Texas and Latinas in Progress in collaboration with national partners from Save the Children and Youth Service America. This event is free and open to the public. Families and children are welcome to join us for fun and free interactive educational games and activities.
WHY:
In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance under bipartisan federal law. Honoring this moment in our nation’s history by serving in your community pays tribute to those who lost their lives in 2001 and to those who rose in service as a result of that tragedy. The We Stand Strong local committee collaborates with national partners from Save the Children and Youth Service America to rally the community together for a fun event that educates children and families about emergency preparedness. This fun fair will feature games covering the basics of getting ready for disasters, including 1) Recognizing Risks, 2) Planning Ahead, 3) Gathering Wise Supplies, and 4) What to Do During a Disaster.

Latinas in Progress Free Leadership & College Prep Program

Latinas in Progress Welcomes New Members

The Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas is currently accepting applications for new members to join our Latinas in Progress college readiness program. The LIP Education Series consists of five learning sessions, city wide volunteer opportunities, and HWNT mentors.  This group meets every other week from October to December for FREE college prep workshops geared toward high schoolers. Youth in the program benefit from connecting with a mentor and assistance throughout the college application process. We are encouraging local girls to take advantage of this opportunity to develop leadership and college readiness skills. Through community support from volunteers and community partners, this free of cost program offers girls an opportunity to learn about the steps to prepare for college. JULY 2016 HWNT NOTICIAS

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US AT FRIDA FEST!

Viva La Frida! Thank you to everyone who joined us in honoring the life and legacy of one of Latin America's most influential artists, Frida Kahlo.  We enjoyed a beautiful evening at Joe Vinny & Bronson's Bohemian Cafe on July 23 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. Frida Kahlo inspired art by local artists was auctioned and local vendors were on site. Our guests enjoyed music by Michelle & Aaron, witnessed the creativity of our contestants in the Look-Alike contest, and were inspired by the beautiful poetry by Jasmin Flores. The purpose of our festival was to unite the community through creative expression by collaborating with local artist to pay tribute to a cultural and feminist icon. All proceeds from the event supported the HWNT Scholarship.

The event is free, members are invited to bring an item for our potluck and open to the public as well as our members.  We are hosting a formal dress drive to gather donations of prom and homecoming dresses to support girls with limited means.

OUR ESTRELLA DE TEJAS: Aurora Anaya-Dyer
Each year at the HWNT State conference, HWNT Chapters honor women, from among the membership, who have made a significant contributions to their chapter and community. To be an Estrella, a woman must be an HWNT member, demonstrate leadership qualities, serve as a role model for fellow members and make an impact in her community. Aurora Anaya-Dyer, a HWNT member, has demonstrated these leadership qualities. She impacted our community through many projects, especially through her own company IMA (Inspiration, Motivation, Application). Aurora Anaya-Dyer is a strong leader in our community and an influential role model for young and old. Aurora is passionate about education and promotes it through her past and current work as an educator and counselor in our community. Through her volunteer work, she encourages people to help their community in any way they can, using their different skills and strengths. Aurora believes everyone should be civically engaged- no matter how small the gesture is. The grandeur is in adding everyone’s service making a difference to better humanity and our country.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: MICHELLE DEL RIO
Special thanks to our member of the month Michelle Del Rio. As a part of our scholarship and event planning team, she played a vital role in supporting our goal of raising scholarship funds to support the educational goals of young Latinas. She helped our team with planning logistics, from decorating, to recruiting entertainment, and getting sponsorship for our winter Posada and our Frida Fest celebration. Michelle loves HWNT because it gives her an opportunity to get to know other wonderful and amazing people.  She loves to see how each member of the organization brings something different to the table, whether it be their knowledge, skills, social connections, "costumbres," and resources. Michelle is an El Paso native who grew up in the Lower Valley area. Michelle was the first of her family to go to college. She headed-off to college with one goal: to learn as much as possible to find solutions that would impact the health of her community. Currently, Michelle is working at the Center for Environmental Resource Management at UTEP. In this role, she gets to combine all her interests and skills she has learned. She is passionate about encouraging girls and women in the field of science as a previous president with the Association of Women in Science at Texas Tech. Our team appreciates her enthusiasm for supporting local young women and her efforts to assist with our cultural events and scholarship program.

Help young Latina teens reach their academic goals by donating to the HWNT giving circle. The Latinas in Progress program exposes high school Latinas to college life and provides them with the tools needed to succeed. All donations make a big impact.
SPONSOR A GIRL: You can sponsor one girl in the entire program with a donation of $50 (this covers all the program expenses for one member). Donations will help us cover the costs of the program such as workshop materials, field trip transportation for college campus tours, event costs (venue & food for participants), program recruitment materials, college prep manuals, workshop hand-outs and college scholarship resources.
SPONSOR A SCHOLARSHIP: You can help sponsor a college scholarship of $500 with a monthly donation of ($42) or get a group of 5 friends together to sponsor a scholarship with a $100 donation each. QUINCE PROJECT
The Quince Project Madrinas team is a group of local female leaders dedicated to helping make girls' quince dreams come true for low income girls. This team helps with leadership workshops, mentoring youth, contributing to fundraising efforts and aiding with quince event planning.  HWNT would love to help any way we can. We are looking for volunteers and donations. Volunteers can assist with: donating a gently used prom/homecoming/formal dress, donating for our quince party celebration potluck, assisting with decorations, donating accessories, making a donation, and volunteering at the quince party on August 19.

MENTORS WANTED: 
We are currently recruiting committee members to help with recruiting members, organizing monthly college preparation workshops and guiding girls in the college application process. Thanks to Kristen Daugherty, LCSW, MBA, Chief Executive Officer, Emergence Health Network for speaking at our June meeting about local mental health resources. Special thanks to Sylvia Bonscher for graciously hosting our past sisterhood summer pot-luck meeting on June 29 at her lovely home. During our social meeting, we divided into committees to brainstorm new ideas for our organization.

FRIDA FEST - July 23


HWNT is proud to present its 1st annual Frida Fest event. Come out and enjoy a beautiful evening with us on July 23 from 4-10pm at Joe Vinny & Bronsons Bohemian Cafe (824 N. Piedras). Join us in honoring the life and legacy of one of Latin America's most influential artists. Frida Kahlo inspired art by local artists will be auctioned and local vendors will be on site. Enjoy Frida art exhibit, look-alike contest, photo booth, raffle, food, fashion, jewelry, and more. All Proceeds support the Latinas in Progress Scholarship.

SCHOLARSHIP DINNER
Our team was thrilled to host our scholarship dinner in May. Our members gathered at Andale Restaurant to present the "Magdalena Chavez Scholarship" to high school senior Fernanda Loya. We are grateful to our member Aurora Anaya-Dyer and her entire family for making this scholarship possible. Aurora and her siblings gathered together to sponsor a scholarship in memory of their mother who inspired them all to pursue their own educational goals. Our team also honored our top Latinas in Progress participants who completed the entire program by committing the semester to joining us for monthly college prep workshops. Our entire HWNT team is dedicated to continuing this tradition to build our scholarship campaign to support the educational dreams of more local young women.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: LUPITA ORNELAS
Special thanks to our member of the month Lupita Ornelas, our HWNT Sisterhood Co-Chair. In this role, she helps our team plan our monthly membership meetings, recruit dynamic guest speakers and plan sisterhood events. She is the founder of www.MyBizFlyer.com. She is a talented business owner, marketing professional, and event planner. Our team is grateful for her support in helping us connect with more local women leaders, assisting with scholarship fundraising, helping with membership recruiting and organizing excellent presentations for our team.

SERVICE RECAP: HELPING FOSTER YOUTH A big thanks to all our members who contributed to sponsoring much-needed toiletries for youth aging out of the foster care system & supporting our local Pride Center for foster youth during our May service project. Many of these foster kids are on their own with very little resources after they turn 18, so these donations go a long way. Special thanks to our member Sylvia Bonscher who rallied her friends, co-workers and students to join in supporting our charity drive.  



JULY CHARITY DRIVE: Support Refugees Our community is welcoming over 3,000 refugees from Cuba over the next few weeks. The Houchen Community Center and the El Paso Diocese are serving as emergency shelters and hospitality centers. They are in need of food donations and water. HWNT EL PASO MAY NEWSLETTER

MEMBERSHIP MEETING: MAY 4
Come to our May 4 membership meeting at 6:00pm at Andale Restaurant (9201 Gateway Blvd. West). Our guest speakers will be Aurora Anaya-Dyer from Inspiration, Motivation & Application. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: VALERIA VENECIA

Special thanks to our member of the month Valeria Venecia, our HWNT Secretary. She currently serves as the Art Market Coordinator and leads the management of the artist market. She has been instrumental in keeping the HWNT El Paso team organized by maintaining minute records and agendas for our meetings. She is a creative and talented organizer and event planner who played a strong role in helping us with planning our special events such as the Wonder Women Wellness Day and Holiday Posada.

SERVICE PROJECT: El Paso Food Bank
The El Paso Food Bank will be hosting  "Stamp Out Hunger" which is the largest single-day food drive in the nation and it will take place on Saturday, May 14th from 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM. SERVICE PROJECT RECAP: EASTER 
Special thanks to all the members who donated to our Easter basket drive and volunteered at our Easter party in April. Our team hosted a celebration for the children at the TLC women's shelter with crafts, an egg hunt and prizes. EVENT SPOTLIGHT: WONDER WOMEN 
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Wonder Women Wellness Day celebration for Women's History Month. The day was an uplifting session on wellness, relaxation and rejuvenation. Our team enjoyed a yoga and relaxation workshop with Rubi Orozco, a flamenco dance lesson led by Carla Briones, breast cancer awareness talk by survivor Marisela Akle, a cervical cancer presentation by the Cancer & Chronic Disease Consortium, and a nutrition workshop by Vicky Mihalyov from Trinity Health Coaching. Special thanks to our planning team members Valerie Venecia, Sara Aragon & Lupita Ornelas.

LATINAS IN PROGRESS
MENTORS WANTED: 
Our team is hosting a series of college prep and leadership workshop for the girls in our Latinas in Progress program. We are currently recruiting committee members to help with recruiting members, organizing monthly college preparation workshops and guiding girls in the college application process. The LIP Education Series consists of five learning sessions, city wide volunteer opportunities, and HWNT mentors. As a part of the program, we are recruiting professional women to share their career experience with our team. Volunteers are needed to meet with small groups of girls to share their college and career advice for our participants. To volunteer, email latinasinprogressep@gmail.com. 

GIVING CIRCLE: 
Help young Latina teens reach their academic goals by donating to the HWNT online fundraiser. The Latinas in Progress program exposes high school Latinas to college life and provides them with the tools needed to succeed in their personal and professional life. This education program offers five learning sessions, field trips to local college campuses and college preparation workshops. Donations will help us cover the costs of the program such as workshop materials, field trip transportation for college campus tours, event costs (venue & food for participants), program recruitment materials, college prep manuals, workshop hand-outs and college scholarship resources.

SPONSOR A GIRL: You can sponsor one girl in the program with a donation of $50 (this covers all the program expenses for one member). SERVICE PROJECT: 
Our HWNT hermanas are hosting an egg hunt at the TLC women's shelter on March 24 from 4:30-7:30pm at 3700 Altura. We are accepting donations of eggs, candy, baskets & goodies. Volunteers are needed on Thursday from 4:30-7:30pm. For more info, contact us at hwntelpaso@ gmail.com.

APRIL MEETING: 
Come to our April general membership meeting on April 6 at 6:00pm at Trinity Health Coaching (7362 Remcon Circle). Join us at 6pm to mix & mingle and the meeting will begin promptly at 6:30pm. Our guest speakers from Trinity Health Coaching will share their wellness tips with guests.

WONDER WOMEN WELLNESS DAY:
Join us for a celebration of International Women's Day with a gathering focused on enriching the mind, body and spirit of local women. We will feature several wellness presenters on topics such as meditation, yoga, zumba, nutrition, beauty and health fair booths and much more. Tickets are $10 and includes lunch. The celebration will take place on April 2 from 12-5pm at the the Maud Sullivan Gallery - Downtown Library (501 N. Oregon).

SERVICE PROJECT: 
Join us in bringing awareness of violence against women at the 1 Billion Rising VDay Celebration on February 13 from 10am-3pm at Cafe Mayapan (2000 Texas Ave.). Volunteers are needed to host an information booth for HWNT and to help guide guest in an interactive storytelling session. To celebration Women's Day on March 5, we will be hosting a booth at the Downtown Artist Market Women's Day Celebration from 9am to 1pm on Anthony street. Volunteers can help distribute informational materials about HWNT and lead artistic activities inspired by famous female artists.

MARCH MEETING: 
Come to our March general membership meeting on March 2 at 6:30pm. Our meeting with feature a session on de-stress and self-care.

Latinas in Progress College Day

WHAT: The Latinas in Progress College Day is a college prep workshop and UTEP field trip centered around college attainment. The event will feature college readiness workshops, a college student panel and keynote speakers presenting on the value of academic pursuit.

WHO: The event is co-hosted by HWNT, Latinitas, and the UTEP Center for Civic Engagement.

WHEN: February 13 from 10am-2pm

WHERE: UTEP Miner Village (2401 N Oregon)

WHY: Young Latinas are suffering the highest rates of school drop out of all their female peers and College Day is a direct effort to curb those statistics by demystifying the college experience. Girls are invited to discover the importance of college and get an insider’s view of college life. Girls will have an opportunity to tour the UTEP campus, meet college student mentors, attend workshops on the importance of education and participate in activities to start preparing for college.

February Meeting Highlights

Thank you to everyone who came out for our February general meeting. Our team was honored to learn more about our local PBS Station thanks to our guest speaker Emily Martin-Loya, KCOS General Manager.


Thank you to the KCOS team for the tour and outstanding presentation. KCOS-TV inspires, informs and educates our viewers through quality educational programming; while producing superb local programs tailored to our community. Since 1978, the non-profit station is community owned and operated. It provides viewers high quality programming including 12 hours of enlightening kid shows on weekdays. January Meeting Highlights

Thanks to everyone who attending our January general meeting. We welcomed a nonprofit spotlight featuring Marlett Garcia from the El Paso Center for Hope for Human Trafficking Prevention Month. We also presented a financial literacy workshop with State Farm Agent Paul Rosales. Again, thank you to everyone who attended this meeting. We hope to see you at the next one!

Latinas in Progress

Our team is excited to kick-off our Latinas in Progress education program on January 23 from 10am-2pm at the El Paso Main Library (501 N. Oregon). We are recruiting female teens who are interested in participating in this engaging college-prep opportunity. Girls will meet one Saturday a month starting in January for leadership, college readiness workshops, and community service projects. Applications are being accepted. Please share this opportunity with area girls. We are also recruiting volunteers to serve as mentors for our group of young leaders. Happy New Year

Happy New Years Hermanas! Thanks to all our team for a fantastic year in 2015. Together, we've been able to make tremendous strides towards our local goal of enriching the mind, body and spirit. Here are highlights of a few of our accomplishments from last year.

ENRICHING THE MIND:

-Participated in the Wise Latina Summit
-Joined in the Women's Collective Impact Coalition
-Hosted a holiday posada -Sent a delegate to the HWNT State Conference
-Hosted meetings with HWNT state officers and leaders

-Participated in community events: Butterfly Effect Mother's Day Celebration & VDay 1 Billion Rising anti-violence rally

ENRICHING THE BODY:
-We hosted a laughter yoga workshop

SERVICE & VOLUNTEERISM
Our team completed theses service and volunteer projects to make an impact in our community:
-Sponsored a $500 college scholarship
-Volunteered at Viva la Mujer festival, Maestro Cares Foundation, building the Kaboom playground
-Provided career panelists and guest speakers for the Chica Power Fest and the Inspiring Our Daughters Workshop
-Donated over 50 canned food items to sponsor Thanksgiving at La Posada
-Collected100 winter wear donations for Dame la Mano
-Gathered toiletry donations for Villa Maria homeless shelter & book donations for Tu Libro
-Hosted a quince dress drive for the Quince Project
-Hosted an information session with Make a Wish

Our team is dedicated to promoting the advancement of women in public, corporate and civic life through education, personal and professional development. Together, we can advance the educational, cultural, social, legal and economic well-being of the women in our community.
